Chalking For Change Exhibition

Alongside Arts in the Right Place, we held a photography exhibition between the 13-20th December, with an opening night and raffle on the 13th.

Planning for the exhibition began in September and after various set backs we stumbled across Eleanor and her arts collective Arts in the Right Space, based out of Racoon Studios in Castlegate. An unassuming, empty Shoe Zone building ended up being the perfect location, a hub of creativity and community passion.

Opening night on December 13th saw a great turn out with a raffle, music, chalking, refreshments and a speech from our founders. We managed to raise over £100 on this evening alone.

The theme of the exhibition centres around how chalking is political and includes images of our chalking with the corresponding anonymous testimonies.

It’s crucial for us to engage with activism outside of social media. If we’re wanting to create community change we need to be within the community, engaging with people in person. Over this time we really reflected on the lack of third spaces- not home, not work, somewhere else you can go for free. Finding a space like Racoon Studios is a rarity- its crucial we keep supporting local art and activism when resources and funds are so often lacking.

It was great to be able to work alongside Eleanor and her volunteers who share such similar values to us. We encourage everyone to continue supporting their work in the area.

Thank you to Marsya Ali from Forge Press for such a wonderful review.

The exhibition is held at 38 Haymarket, S1 2AX and as late January 2025, is still up.
